Esas Discovery Set Review: The $50 Kit and the $150 Catch

I have worked around fine fragrance long enough to be sceptical of the phrase "clean perfume." So when a brand tells me it has removed the synthetics that make modern perfumery work, my first question is always the same: what did you replace them with, and what did it cost you?

The Esas Discovery Set — $50.00, currently carrying 279 reviews on the brand's own site — is the cheapest honest way to answer that question for yourself. Here is what is actually in it, and the part of the offer I think buyers misread.

What you actually receive

The four curated sets are genuinely differentiated rather than four shuffles of the same deck. Everyday Fresh runs Iris Milk, Bare, Bergamot Beach, Rosewood, Eau Naturelle and Neroli Blossom. ESAS Icons collects Gravity, Iris Milk, Bare, Summer '95, Cherry Cloud and Sweet Cream & Vanilla. Men's Essentials goes considerably darker with Gravity, Primal, Santal Oud, Noble, Fearless and Spiced Woods.

The credit mechanism, read carefully

This is where I want to slow down, because the headline on the homepage reads "100% Credited Toward Your Full-Size Fragrance" and that is not quite the whole sentence.

The product page is more precise: you receive a code for $50.00 off any order over $150.00. Those are different propositions. A full-size Esas fragrance runs $45 to $55 — so a single bottle does not reach the $150 threshold. To redeem the credit you are committing to roughly a three-bottle order, or a bundle.

Stack two kits and you get $95 off $150+; three kits gets you $145 off $150+, which is close to a free order for anyone buying at that volume. The scaling is real and it is generous at the top end. But the entry-level framing — try six scents, get your $50 back — quietly assumes you were going to spend $150 anyway. Esas also states a limit of one gift card per customer.

What the brand gets right

• Ingredient transparency is stated as policy, not vibes. MADE SAFE® certification is a third-party screen against a published hazard list, which is a meaningfully higher bar than the unregulated word "clean."
• 1.5 mL is enough to make a real decision. That is roughly 8-12 full applications — enough to wear a scent across different days, temperatures and moods, which is the only way to judge a fragrance honestly.
• The sampling price is proportionate. $50 for six scents against a $45-$55 full-size price is a fair ratio in a category where discovery sets are routinely a profit centre.

Three honest drawbacks

1. The $150 threshold is the real price of entry. As above — the credit is not a rebate on your $50, it is a volume discount that activates at triple the cost of a single bottle. If you intend to buy exactly one full-size bottle after sampling, treat the $50 as spent and gone.

2. You cannot build your own six. The sets are fixed curations. If you already know you want to compare Santal Oud against Cherry Cloud specifically, no single kit gives you both — Santal Oud sits in Unisex & Universal and Men's Essentials, Cherry Cloud sits in ESAS Icons. That is a real constraint for anyone shopping with a shortlist rather than a mood.

3. All-natural composition has a longevity ceiling, and that is chemistry, not criticism. A 100% natural composition will generally sit closer to the skin and fade faster. That is the trade you are choosing. If your benchmark is a designer eau de parfum that you can still smell at dinner, calibrate your expectations before you order — and use the samples specifically to test wear time on your own skin, because that is the variable most likely to decide whether you keep buying.

Who this is for

Buy the Discovery Set if you have a specific reason to avoid synthetic fragrance — pregnancy, migraine triggers, a diagnosed sensitivity, or simply a considered preference — and you want to find something you actually enjoy wearing rather than merely tolerate. Also buy it if you are planning a larger order anyway, because at two or three kits the credit maths turns strongly in your favour.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want one bottle and one bottle only; the economics do not reward you. Skip it if heavy projection and all-day longevity are non-negotiable. And skip it if you are buying a gift for someone whose taste you do not know well — fragrance is the single worst blind-gift category, and a sample kit only defers that problem rather than solving it.

Verdict

The Esas Discovery Set is a fair, well-constructed way into a brand that is doing something genuinely harder than its competitors — building fine fragrance without the synthetic toolkit. At $50 for six 1.5 mL vials it is priced sensibly, and the certifications behind it are real rather than decorative. My one substantive complaint is presentational: the credit is advertised as "100% credited" when it is functionally a $50-off-$150 code, and buyers deserve that in the headline rather than the fine print. Go in understanding that, and this is a sound purchase.
