The chemistry is LiFePO4, rated at 4,000 cycles to 70%+ capacity. If you cycled it every single day, that is roughly eleven years before you hit the 70% threshold. That is the number I care about most, because it converts a CA$709 purchase into a genuinely long-horizon one rather than a three-year consumable.

What Jackery Got Right
The recharge speed is the real headline
A 1.58-hour full AC recharge, with an emergency mode that claims 0–100% in one hour, changes how you use a power station. Slow units force you to plan around them. This one you top up over lunch. For anyone using it as outage insurance, that gap between a storm warning and the actual outage is usually enough.
Output headroom you can actually use
Jackery publishes runtime figures that are easy to sanity-check against the 1,070Wh capacity: a 550W coffee maker for 1.5 hours, a 1,160W microwave for 0.8 hours, a 100W projector for 8 hours, a 60W portable refrigerator for 15 hours, and roughly 25 drone charges at 90W. The fridge number is the one that matters in an outage — 15 hours covers most of what a utility company will put you through.
UPS behaviour under 20ms
Sub-20ms switchover is fast enough to keep a desktop, NAS or aquarium pump running through a cut without a reboot. That quietly turns this from camping gear into home-office infrastructure, and it is a feature usually reserved for dedicated UPS hardware.

1. Car charging takes 12 hours
Against a 1.58-hour wall charge, 12 hours from the car port is a genuine limitation. A four-hour drive between campsites recovers roughly a third of the pack. If your plan is to refill while driving, budget accordingly or add solar — which is a separate purchase.
2. 23.8 lbs is heavy, and there are no wheels
At 10.8 kg this is a two-hands-and-a-straight-back carry. It moves from garage to truck to campsite fine. It does not move comfortably down a trail. "Portable" here means transportable, not backpackable, and the dimensions — nearly 13 inches long — eat real trunk space.
3. It is locked to North American power
AC output is 120V/60Hz and charge input is 100–120V/60Hz. There is no 230V mode. Take it to Europe or most of Asia and it becomes luggage. For a unit at this price with this cycle life, that regional lock-in deserves to be stated plainly.
4. The second USB-C port is only 30W
One port does 100W, the second caps at 30W. Two people with modern laptops cannot both fast-charge. At 1,070Wh this feels like an avoidable spec compromise.
5. Cold weather narrows the window
Discharge is rated to −10°C and charging stops below 0°C. Winter campers in a Canadian January will need to keep it inside the tent or the vehicle overnight.

Doing The Runtime Math Yourself
Manufacturer runtime charts are marketing, but they are checkable. Take the 60W portable refrigerator figure of 15 hours: 60W × 15h = 900Wh, against a 1,070Wh pack. That implies roughly 84% usable efficiency after inverter losses, which is a credible number for a unit in this class rather than an inflated one. The 100W projector at 8 hours works out to 800Wh — the same ballpark. When a brand's own numbers survive division, that is a reasonable signal the rest of the sheet is honest.
Apply that to your own load. A 700W space heater lands near 1.2 hours. A 15W router plus a 25W modem runs for well over a day. A CPAP at 40W covers two full nights. Those are the calculations worth doing before you buy, and this pack gives you the inputs to do them.
The Solar Bundle Question
Jackery lists the unit on its own at CA$709, and an Explorer 1000 v2 + SolarSaga 100 Air × 2 bundle at CA$1,149, down from CA$1,599. That is CA$440 for two 100W panels. Given how slow the 12-hour car charge is, solar is the honest answer to off-grid recharging here, and buying the panels bundled costs less than adding them later. If your use case is genuinely off-grid rather than outage backup, treat the bundle as the real price of entry rather than an upsell.
Build And Warranty
The warranty is 3 years, extended to 5 when purchased through the official store — a detail worth noting, because third-party marketplace listings do not always carry the extension. Against a 4,000-cycle rating, a five-year warranty is Jackery putting a reasonable amount of its own money behind the cell claim.
Verdict
At CA$709 against a CA$1,099 list, the Explorer 1000 v2 is a well-judged piece of hardware with an honest spec sheet. The 1.58-hour recharge, 1,500W output and 4,000-cycle LiFePO4 pack are the three numbers doing the heavy lifting, and all three hold up. The compromises — weight, 12-hour car charging, 120V-only operation — are real but predictable, and none of them are hidden in the fine print.
If you want one box that covers outages at home and power at a campsite, and you live on a 120V grid, this is a sensible buy at the current price. If you need it to travel internationally or ride on your back, look elsewhere.
