What the Autoforge XPro gets right

Two sources, one setup, is a real time saving

The value here is not the lasers, it is the fixturing. Any job that combines a metal component and an organic one — an engraved wooden case with a marked steel plate, a leather good with a branded hardware clasp — normally means aligning the same part twice on two machines. Doing it in one enclosure with one coordinate system removes the alignment step entirely, and alignment is where small shops lose their time and their scrap rate.

A 16MP camera changes the setup workflow

Camera positioning lets you see the material bed and place the design on it visually rather than jogging to corners and guessing. On irregular offcuts and pre-made goods this is the difference between a five-minute setup and a twenty-minute one, and it substantially reduces ruined stock. Three things I would change

1. Two sources means two sets of consumables, safety gear and maintenance

A dual machine does not halve the running costs. Fiber and diode wavelengths need different protective eyewear — Monport sells 355nm OD5 glasses separately for its UV machines, which tells you how wavelength-specific this is. You also need serious extraction: Monport’s own 600W five-layer fume extractor is listed at $1,999.99, and engraving metal and plastics without it is a health decision, not a budget one. Plan for the true installed cost, not the sticker price.

2. Key workflow features are not shipping yet

The "load once, keep producing" continuous workflow is listed by Monport as coming soon. Buying a machine on the strength of an unreleased feature is a familiar way to be disappointed, and there is no published date. Evaluate the Autoforge XPro on what it does today.

3. 20W of diode is modest for cutting

Twenty watts of diode power is respectable for engraving and light cutting in thin plywood, leather and acrylic, but it is not a CO2 replacement. If your work involves cutting 6mm or thicker material at production speed, this machine will frustrate you — Monport sells 70W and higher CO2 machines precisely because that is a different job. Be clear whether you need to mark organics or cut them.

Who should buy it — and who should skip it

Buy it if

  • You run a small production shop where jobs routinely mix metal and organic materials, and re-fixturing between two machines is costing you real hours.
  • Bench space is genuinely constrained and consolidating two machines into one has value beyond the purchase price.
  • You sell in batches and the camera plus batch engraving workflow maps onto how you already work.

Skip it if

  • You only mark metal — a standalone fiber machine will cost considerably less.
  • Your work is mostly cutting thicker wood or acrylic, where a CO2 machine is the right tool.
  • Your budget is exactly $3,499.99, because extraction and safety equipment are additional and non-negotiable.

The verdict

The Autoforge XPro is aimed at a specific and real problem, and the combination of dual sources, camera positioning and one-click autofocus addresses it thoughtfully rather than superficially. At $3,499.99 against a $5,699.99 list price, a shop that would otherwise buy two machines can make the numbers work. What I would not do is buy it on the strength of the unreleased continuous-workflow feature, and I would not buy it at all if my work sits clearly on one side of the metal-versus-organics line. This is a consolidation machine for people who genuinely straddle both — for everyone else, a dedicated fiber or CO2 unit remains the better spend.
