Promeed 23 Momme Silk Eye Mask Review: What the Momme Number Buys, and What the 68% Off Does Not

I work in textiles, and silk bedding is the category where I see the widest gap between what a spec sheet says and what shoppers think it says. The word people fixate on is "mulberry". The number that actually determines what you receive is the momme weight — and almost nobody explains it.

So let me explain it, using the Promeed 23MM Mulberry Silk Contour Eye Mask at $24.99 as the worked example, and then let me be equally direct about the parts of this listing I would not take at face value.

What "23 momme" actually means

Momme (mm) is a weight measure, not a thread count. One momme equals the weight in pounds of a piece of silk 45 inches wide and 100 yards long. In practice it tells you how densely the fabric is woven and how much silk is physically present.

The scale runs roughly like this. Below 16 momme, silk is thin and short-lived — it is the weight used for scarves and linings, and it will not survive nightly laundering. Nineteen momme is the mainstream standard for pillowcases and eye masks and is perfectly good. Twenty-two to 25 momme is the premium band: denser weave, better drape, longer service life, and noticeably more opaque.

• The percentage claims have no stated method. "30% less friction than last generation", "80% colour glossing up", "50% enhanced" — none of these say what was measured, against what, or by whom. Percentages without a test protocol are decoration. The 23-momme figure is verifiable; these are not.
• The press quotes are unsourced. The page carries what read as endorsements attributed to well-known publications, presented as text on Promeed's own site with no links to the original articles. I am not saying they are inaccurate — I have no way to know either way, which is precisely the problem. Unlinked press quotes should carry no weight in your decision.
• No dimensions and no strap detail. There is no width, height, or eye-cavity depth published, and nothing about whether the strap is elastic, adjustable, or fitted with a buckle. For a contoured mask, strap type is what determines whether it stays put when you turn over, and cavity depth is what determines whether it presses on your lashes. Both matter more than the momme count for actual comfort.
• Black only, and no care instructions on the listing. Silk needs cool water and a pH-neutral or silk-specific detergent; standard biological detergents contain proteases that digest protein fibres, and silk is a protein fibre. Does a silk eye mask actually do anything?

Two things, modestly and honestly. It blocks light better than a thin fabric mask because a 23-momme weave is dense and opaque, and light exclusion is genuinely relevant to sleep quality. And silk has a smoother surface than cotton, which means less mechanical friction against the delicate skin around the eye and less tugging on lashes.

What it will not do is any of the more ambitious things this category sometimes implies. There is no good evidence that a fabric prevents wrinkles, and I would treat any claim in that direction as decorative. Buy it for darkness and for a smoother surface. Those are real and sufficient.

Who should buy it

People who already know they sleep better in the dark and want a mask that will last more than a season. Side sleepers, for whom a contoured mask is much more comfortable than a flat one. Anyone with sensitive skin around the eyes who reacts to synthetic masks — the OEKO-TEX certification is meaningful here. And travellers, for whom a $25 mask that packs to nothing is an easy purchase.

Who should not

Anyone who wants a mask with a cold-gel insert or built-in headphones. Anyone unwilling to hand-wash or use a delicates cycle with the right detergent. Anyone who needs published dimensions before ordering. And anyone shopping on the basis of the "68% off" figure, because that saving is not real and buying because of it will only teach you to distrust the brand later.

How to wash it without ruining it

Silk is a protein fibre, chemically closer to hair than to cotton, and almost everything that damages it is avoidable.

Use cool water, never hot. Heat both weakens the fibre and sets the protein-based residues that build up from skin contact. Use a detergent formulated for silk or wool, or a plain pH-neutral one — the critical thing is avoiding enzymes. Most mainstream "biological" detergents contain proteases specifically designed to break down protein stains, and they do not distinguish between the protein in a stain and the protein in the fabric. A few washes with the wrong detergent will visibly dull a 23-momme silk.

Skip fabric softener; silk does not need it and the residue kills the surface glide you paid for. Do not tumble dry. Do not wring. Press the water out in a towel and air dry away from direct sunlight, which degrades silk over time. And wash it more often than you think — an eye mask collects sebum and skincare residue nightly, and that residue is what makes silk go limp.

A contoured mask is built with moulded eye cups so that the fabric arches over the eye rather than lying flat on it. Two consequences follow, one good and one worth knowing about.
