Handheld gaming has an accessory problem. The consoles are expensive, awkwardly shaped, and increasingly come with a dock, a charger, a controller and a pile of cables that all need to travel together. Most people end up using a generic camera bag or throwing everything loose into a rucksack, where the screen meets the charger and loses.

The tomtoc Arccos-G47 - listed at $54.99, currently showing at $46.75 with a 15% reduction - is built specifically for that pile. Here is what it is made of and where I would push back.

840D and YKK are the two specs that justify the price

Both of these are named components rather than adjectives, which is why they are worth reading.

840D refers to denier - the linear mass density of the yarn. Higher denier means thicker, tougher threads and better abrasion and tear resistance. For context, cheap luggage and promotional bags are often 210D to 420D; 840D is in the territory of proper technical luggage and motorcycle gear. It is the specification that determines whether the bag still looks acceptable after a year of being shoved under aeroplane seats. That it is recycled and splash-resistant are useful additions rather than the headline.

YKK zippers matter more than almost any other single component in a bag, because the zip is what fails. A bag with excellent fabric and a generic zip becomes rubbish the day the slider separates. Naming YKK is a meaningful commitment, and its absence from a competitor's spec sheet is usually deliberate.

The removable EVA W-shaped padding is the design detail I would highlight. Handhelds have a specific vulnerability: the screen sits in the middle, flanked by joysticks that stand proud of the body. A flat pad presses on the sticks; a W-shaped insert bridges over them and supports the shell instead. Making it removable means the bag also works as a plain organised carry-all when you are not bringing the console - which quietly doubles its usefulness.

The compatibility list is the real selling point. Seven named devices across Valve, Nintendo, Asus, Lenovo and Sony is unusually broad. Handheld owners upgrade and switch platforms frequently, and a bag that survives your next console is worth more than one that does not.

Three honest drawbacks

1. There are no dimensions or capacity figures anywhere. For a bag, this is the specification. No external dimensions, no internal dimensions, no litre capacity, no weight. "Spacious main compartment" and "space for multiple docks" are not measurements. You cannot check whether it fits under a particular airline's seat, whether it will hold your specific dock, or whether it is bigger than you want for a short trip. Ask tomtoc for the external dimensions before ordering, especially if you fly with strict personal-item limits.

2. "Splash-resistant" is the correct term, and it is a limitation. The fabric will shrug off a spilled drink or a short dash through rain. It is not waterproof, there is no mention of a coated liner, waterproof zips or a rain cover, and 840D nylon absorbs water at the seams. If you commute by bike or live somewhere wet, treat this as a bag that needs to go inside something else in a downpour - carrying £500 of electronics in a splash-resistant bag in heavy rain is optimistic.

3. The catalogue has some pricing confusion worth watching. tomtoc's storefront lists this at $54.99 with a 15% discount applied at $46.75, which is straightforward. But elsewhere in the same catalogue there are items priced at $0.00, entries with numeric codes as product names, and at least one product where the "bulk purchase" version is listed above a lower comparison figure. None of that affects this bag, but it does mean you should confirm the total in your cart rather than trusting a displayed discount, and be careful you are ordering the G47 rather than a similarly-named variant.

One further note: at $54.99 this sits at the upper end of handheld cases. Simpler hard shells for a single console cost $25 to $35. You are paying for the multi-device compatibility, the dock and cable storage, and the component quality - which is a fair trade if you actually travel with the full kit, and poor value if you only ever carry the console itself.

Who should buy it - and who should not

Buy it if you travel with a handheld plus its dock, charger and a controller or two, you own or expect to own more than one platform, and you want components that will outlast the console. The 840D fabric, YKK zips and removable protective insert are the right specifications, and the 2-year warranty with 30-day returns backs them.

Skip it if you only ever slip a Steam Deck into a rucksack - a $30 hard shell does that job. Skip it if you need to confirm dimensions against an airline sizer before buying, or if you need genuine waterproofing rather than splash resistance.

Verdict

tomtoc has specified this bag properly where it counts and designed the interior around a real problem - the joystick-and-screen geometry that ruins handhelds in generic bags. Broad compatibility across seven devices makes it a purchase that survives your next console, and the material choices are honest and named. The omission is basic: publish the dimensions. Until then, ask for them, and treat splash resistance as exactly what the word says.
